Prof. Edward Lungu Wins Prestigious AMMSI-Phillip Griffiths Prize. https://www.rgsmafrica.com/2016/09/13/prof-edward-lungu-wins-prestigious-ammsi-phillip-griffiths-prize/ Tue, 13 Sep 2016 08:37:36 +0000 http://www.rgsmafrica.com/?p=448 The 2016 AMMSI-Phillip Griffiths Prize awarded to Professor Edward M. Lungu for outstanding contribution to mathematics in the area of mathematical modeling for hydrology, ecology, and epidemiology, with an emphasis on understanding the progression of HIV/AIDS and the treatment of those who have the disease; and for his role in educating and mentoring the next generation of African mathematicians.

EDWARD LUNGU graduated from the University of Zambia in 1975 and received his PhD from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom, in 1981. After several years on the faculty of the University of Zambia, he spent almost 30 years at the University of Botswana, where he rose through the ranks to become a full professor. A year ago he was appointed Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Botswana University of Science and Technology.

Professor Lungu works in the area of mathematical modeling for hydrology, ecology, and epidemiology, with an emphasis on understanding the progression of HIV/AIDS. He has developed curricula in mathematical modeling and mathematical biology, and courses in epidemiological modeling and ecological modeling, benefiting hundreds of students throughout southern Africa. In addition, he has supervised numerous PhD and MSc students.

With Professor Fred Roberts of Rutgers, Professor Lungu initiated the DIMACS US-Africa program, which brought together African and American PhD students. That program accomplished its goal of increasing research output within Africa, and was later replaced by the current and equally successful MASAMU/SAMSA project.

Several international organizations have honored Professor Lungu for his work. In 2011 he was awarded the ICIAM Su Buchin Prize in 2011 for “his mathematical modelling of problems related to Africa and his fundamental contribution to developing teaching, research and organizational structures for applied mathematics in Southern Africa.” He led a group based at the University of Botswana that won a five-year, $400,000 grant from the Simons Foundation in 2013 to run a postgraduate training program for students at the Universities of Botswana, Namibia, Kwazulu Natal, Addis Ababa, and Stellenbosch. Professor Lungu also serves on the Advisory Board for the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS)

SAMSA Graduate Workshop Paves The Path Forward. https://www.rgsmafrica.com/2015/03/05/samsa-graduate-workshop-in-victoria-falls-paves-the-path-forward/ Thu, 05 Mar 2015 17:44:43 +0000 http://www.rgsmafrica.com/?p=393 SAMSA Victoria falls, RGSMA

As part of the training of the Simons Foundation project, The Southern Africa Mathematical Sciences Association in conjunction with MASAMU (An Auburn University, USA graduate training project) organized a workshop for graduate students from Africa and the United States from November 24th to November 28th 2014 in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.

The Simons Foundation Project based at the university of Botswana has sponsored two professors and seven graduate students. The project has paid all expenses for the students and professors (registration fee covers workshop material, lunches and local transport, per diem to cover accommodation, diner and travel expenses). This is based upon the project proposal.

Revitalizing Education in Sub-Saharan Africa https://www.rgsmafrica.com/2015/01/05/revitalizing-education-in-sub-saharan-africa/ Mon, 05 Jan 2015 07:02:07 +0000 http://www.rgsmafrica.com/?p=252 Although higher education has developed immeasurably in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), it’s shortfalls are well-documented. Studying conditions are not keeping track with the increasing number of students. Lecture halls are overcrowded, laboratories and libraries are insufficient and living conditions precarious.

Higher education, marked by gaping inefficiencies, has a crippling effect on human capital and stunting the development of SSA nations. The use of information and communication technologies in these institutions continues to be relatively low and makes for a climate that produces graduates whose start at a significant disadvantage compared with their counterparts in the developed world.

Faced with inadequate training and research conditions and low scholarly incentives, there is a strong temptation for many among the brightest students and teaching staff to seek better living conditions in other countries or regions. The dramatic situation prevailing in Africa will not be reversed unless we find solutions to reduce the deterioration of the education system in the region.

The RGSM project offer a collaborative, forward-thinking initiative aimed at improving the quality of higher education in SSA specifically the area of Pure and Applied Mathematics. The program will provide a platform for experienced teachers and researchers in the SSA region to coordinate their efforts in training and research in Pure and Applied Mathematics.

The MSC degree program will prepare students for PhD research in Pure Mathematics, Bio-mathematics, Insurance Mathematics, Financial Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics, Mathematical and Epidemiological Modeling. It is envisaged that by the end of 5 years, the program we will have added at least 8 MSC and 8 PhD graduates. In addition, the program expects to publish at least thirty five (35) journal articles and at least sixty (60) conference/seminar papers during the project period.
